It is not uncommon for people to feel anxious or uneasy about dental procedures. We understand that for some, this anxiety may even deter them from seeking dental care that they need. At West Florida Periodontal, we offer sedation dentistry, which allows patients to feel more comfortable and less anxious about their procedures.
Oral sedation is typically provided ahead of time so that the patient can take it about an hour before the appointment. This gives the oral medication, such as diazepam, time to work. With oral sedation, patients remain conscious but may feel kind of sleepy. This feeling will continue until the medication has worn off, and may take several hours depending on the dose.
IV sedation is similar to oral sedation in its effects but given intravenously. It allows the patient to be relaxed and comfortable without feeling any pain, while generally still being awake. IV sedation provides the doctor with a little more control over how sedated the patient is. For some procedures, the patients will need to be fully sedated – also known as general anesthesia. Another option is to place the patient in a “twilight sleep,” which means they are still conscious, but very drowsy and relaxed. In this state, they are unlikely to remember much of the procedure, if anything.
